Murray River Council has welcomed $3.7 million in Australian Government funding that will see the delivery of several road and community infrastructure projects across the Council.

The support comes from Phase 3 of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program .

$1.8 million of the funds will contribute to the ongoing delivery of Moama’s Horseshoe Lagoon upgrades.

The works include installing new footbridges at the Lagoon along with improved space and viewing platforms for pedestrians and cyclists.

The remaining funds will support the delivery of a range of road-related projects including sealing works, kerb and gutter activities and pedestrian infrastructure.

Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said this targeted funding, initiated by the former Coalition Government, was vital in keeping the region’s economy ticking over through the COVID slowdowns.

“As well as several important road upgrades, the ongoing development of Horseshoe Lagoon is particularly exciting, becoming a special place for visitors (and locals) to really immerse themselves in the Murray’s rich history, unique ecology and overall importance to our nation.”

Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey welcomed the Australian Government’s investment towards local infrastructure projects.

“The support from the Australian Government makes a huge difference to being able to deliver key services to our communities.”

“We have countless kilometres of local roads and infrastructure to upgrade and maintain, so this funding will not only directly benefit our works program, but will also provide a significant boost for jobs, local businesses and economic growth as the projects are delivered.”

The LRCI program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
