The small community of Barellan east of Griffith looks set to keep more of its seniors, thanks to the opening of the first two of five units at the town’s new aged care village.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the village would allow elderly residents to retire close to their family and friends.

“Regional communities are tight-knit, and this facility will benefit older farming family members who require accommodation close to town and near enough for loved ones to visit,” Dr McVeigh said.

“To ensure more senior members of the community have the choice of remaining within familiar surroundings, three more units will be constructed in the village by the end of this year.”

Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said the project completed her pre-election commitment to help Barellan build independent accommodation options for the elderly.

“I know the long term plan is to build even more units to ensure those who wish to stay in town near friends or family can do so. It’s been a real community effort inspired by the local fundraising committee and I am delighted the Federal Government has been able to assist,” Ms Ley said.

The project was jointly-funded with the Turnbull Coalition Government investing $154,035 and the Barellan Aged Care Support Group contributing $194,624.
