An elected Dutton Liberal Government has committed to revitalise Tocumwal’s aging RSL hall to the tune of $400,000.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Federal Member for Farrer, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, said the work needed to upgrade the facility was very clear when she visited the site last year.
“As well as a renewal to the external cladding, the funding would allow additional work to repair deterioration of the internal walls, including replastering.
“The hall is not only used by the local RSL sub-branch for its activities, it’s also a meeting and activity base for a range of other community groups. In restoring the building, I hope it can remain the wonderful community hub it has been for many more years to come,” Ms Ley said.
The RSL ($30,000) and local Rotary Club ($10,000) will both make a major financial contribution to the project, indicating just how important this upgrade is for the Tocumwal community.
Tocumwal Rotary Club spokesperson, Kerry Davies, said the building was built and originally
used by US Air Force and RAAF and personnel as an officer’s mess during WWII. It also served as a meeting room for the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force who managed operations at the nearby airfield.
“This building has a truly symbolic and historic significance to our town, with an ongoing connection to our veterans and local residents. It would be wonderful to see the hall receive this much needed makeover,” Ms Davies said.
