Sussan Ley entered public life in 2001, securing a surprise and hard-fought victory to become the federal member of parliament for the vast southwest NSW electorate of Farrer.
Building a strong reputation as a dedicated and effective local representative, she went on to win eight successive elections and serve in a range of senior roles within the Australian Government, including Minister for Health and Minister for the Environment.
Following the Coalition’s defeat in 2025, Sussan was elected Leader of the Opposition—becoming the first woman to lead the federal Liberal Party. She concluded her parliamentary career in February 2026.
